We LOVE World Book Day!
Our English Leader is Miss Lally.
Our vision at St Williams is to nurture a life-long love of reading. We aim to develop confident readers who can actively chose, critique and comprehend texts. We strive for pupils to build an understanding of the wider world through varied high-quality texts in which they see themselves represented. Through their school career they are able to develop an identity as a reader.
We know that the development of reading skills is crucial to the progress that children make across the curriculum and we are intent in supporting the children to become confident and effective readers. We have high standards for our readers and expect them to make rapid and sustained progress throughout their time in school. We do this by setting challenging goals, putting support in place and employing skilled teachers to support the children on their reading journey.
We intend:
• To ensure that the reading curriculum equips teachers with the knowledge and understanding to empower all pupils to become confident readers.
• To outline our approach to ensure that all children receive a progression of key skills and knowledge in reading.
• To encourage children to be reflective readers by introducing them to good quality books, from a variety of cultures and in a range of different styles and formats.
• To develop our children’s understanding of a variety of text types including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and traditional tales.
• To develop children’s confidence when reading for different purposes and audiences.
• To use drama, practical tasks, cross curricular activities and role-play where appropriate to immerse children in a text.
• To develop reading skills in tandem with those of writing, so that they may function in society as literate adults and readers for life.
• To create reading opportunities across all areas of the curriculum, to make it more meaningful and relevant to the children.

Our School Library:
We love our LRC! Pupils from all classes get to visit the LRC weekly and can take a book to share with their family or to enjoy by themselves at home. Our library is well stocked and the children take the leading role in keeping it organised, tidy and up-to-date. Children can make suggestions about books they would like to add to the library, as well as restock their class reading areas with books from their favourite authors and topics. Miss Lally uses funds generated from the Book Fair to make sure as many requests as possible are fulfilled.
Our Class Reading Areas:
Each class has its own reading area which are rotated regularly by the children using books from the LRC. Our reading areas are welcoming and inspire a love for reading for pleasure. It is the children’s responsibility to keep them tidy and organised. We take great pride in our reading areas!
Libraries in the Local Area:
We are very fortunate to have beautiful, modern libraries in Bolton and these are easy to make use of. Children of all ages can join the library and borrow books to enjoy at home. Your closest libraries are:
